Painful and sublime, this final installment of the series will pluck at each and every one of your heartstrings. Exasperated with emptiness, with the continual reticence of Kate, Joe gracelessly finds fault with everything of the present in his mission to obliterate his marriage. But when he finds success, ancient ghosts return to shape one final terror. To survive, he’ll need more than money, indeed, more than all the superficialities he’s leaned on for so long.
Ghosts and God is the third instalment of a series, but I was told that you could read this as a stand alone. While that is true, I would recommend reading the first two books before starting this one. There just is some key information missing, which is a shame. That being said, this was still a fun read!
Imagine, me getting serious with that fox,
that absolute vixen.
Liam James’ writing took some getting used to. English is not my first language, I come from the Netherlands, and his writing style includes a lot of words that are more on the difficult side. Now, I have no problem reading writing like that, but it required a change of mindset. Definitely something to keep in mind if you are considering reading this book. The narration is absolutely beautiful, reminding me of a gothic romance with Edgar Allen Poe vibes.
The story itself is raw, very realistic and incredibly bittersweet. I love the way that Liam shows the thought process of our main character. His brain is running a million times an hour, which felt incredibly realistic to me. Joe is by no means a lovable character, but he is realistic to a fault, feeling like a raw and real person. That really sold the book on four stars for me. His guilt is on full display, as well as his negative downward spiral. This spiral is so recognizable that it hurts.
There are a few erotic scenes in this book, but they are few and far in between. I like my books a bit more on the spicier side, but for a short book it has a pretty good balance. The spicy scenes that we did get lacked a bit of detail. I like to read about how big a guy’s cock is, how it slides inside, how a woman’s cunt gets pushed apart. But this book lacked that, feeling more like a quick skim over the erotic scenes or a fade to black. Not a bad take on erotica at all, but not my preference.
I was also expecting a bigger emphasis on the paranormal expect. There were a few tidbits and hints through out the chapters, leaving me wanting for more depth and more information. I think this would be solved if you first read the other two books, that need for a deeper backstory. Which is why I recommend starting with book one.
Next to raw emotions, there also was some humor braided into the story. While the narration is heavy and emotional, the humoristic little twists and turns added just enough light to have a good balance. Parts of the book made me gasp, other parts made me laugh, other parts had my eyes glued on the page. It pulled different emotions from me.
How many millions of pejorative phrases, catastrophic and cruel,
swam like evil sperm through my mind in that millisecond?
Ghosts and God is a gripping story about Joe, delving into the chaos that is the human psyche. It feels raw and real, taking you along for the bumpy ride that is the main character’s negative downward spiral. You feel how the character gets more depressed with every page, with every little happening.
Good bits
Bad bits
- Raw and realistic emotions
- Beautifully narrated
- Short, so a quick read
- Bittersweet ending
- Nicely balanced between humour and suspense
- Very few smut scenes
- I expected more paranormal aspects
- A little difficult if English isn’t your 1st language
If you’re a fan of gothic paranormal, then you will probably enjoy Ghosts and God by Liam James. The emotions are raw and real, the main character unlovable in his downward spiral. All the books in this series are on the shorter side, so they are a quick read.
