Emery is a climate activist and cinematographer filming in Antarctica. While there, she encounters Jack Frost, who saves her life. The last thing Emery wants is a charming stalker ice god screwing with her scientific view of the world; but she can’t help being curious about Jack’s ongoing war with the fire goddess Auxesia. Emery’s association with Jack puts them both in more danger, even as they become emotionally and physically entangled.
This book is a steamy romance based on the mythical character of Jack Frost, with an HEA and a number of favorite romance tropes, as well as themes of climate preservation and a holiday atmosphere.
Jack Frost was not the smuttiest book I’ve ever touched. We all know I have read far worse than Fae smut. But something about this story simply worked so well for me! I loved it to bits!
My one indulgence is art. And now, apparently, you.
I am not sure what I was expecting when picking up this book, but it was not the fun and cute story that I eventually got. It was smutty enough for me to be interested. Yet, it wasn’t the smut (which was less than normally) that held me interested. No, it was the story that Rebecca told. I did not expect this to be this fun, definitely a positive surprise!
Let’s be entirely honest here. Jack Frost read more like a fanfic than it did as a book. But I honestly did not mind that at all. After the first few chapters I came to the conclusion that this was simply Rebecca’s writing style. It was fast paced and easy to read, sometimes a little bit too easy even. It could have used a few more ‘adult-like’ words. I can’t really explain it very well, but I think this covers the load as good as it can be.
Jack is such a sweet character! I love that he is a cute little cinnamon roll in almost all re-tellings that I get my hand on. This seemed to be a theme through out, and it just feels right. The fact that Jack Frost has a very specific personality type simply tickles my brain in all the good ways.
That being said, Emory was a huge bitch through most of the story. While I could understand it at the beginning, at some point -somewhere at the halfway point- it would have been nice to see some slow development between the two of them. The very moment that Emory switched from being mean to being completely in love felt a little bit too sudden. There could have been a better developing arch.
As you can see, even though I really loved the book I didn’t rate it five stars. Mainly because of what I said above; Emory’s character development was too sudden. Besides that, there also was something a little rushed about the ending. Now, Kenney has a very fast-paced writing style, so in a way it was probably to be expected. But I would have liked for things to be drawn out a little more.
Everything considered, definitely one of my favourite reads of 2024, and I can’t wait to pick up another book by this author!
Weird, because it felt really personal when you were breathing
into my mouth while I was sleeping.
Jack Frost was unexpectedly good, a fun and quick read with a fast-paced writing style. It lacked in a few points, but that did not take away from my reading enjoyment at all.
Good bits
Bad bits
- I like Kenney’s writing style
- Very easy and fast paced read
- Jack is such a cutie!
- Interesting take on the Jack Frost myth
- A little too fast at times
- Emory was a bitch and her change was too sudden
Everything considered, still an incredibly fun read and definitely a book that is right up my alley! It read like a fanfic at some points, but that didn’t bother me. If you’re a fan of wholesome romances, especially retellings with a little twist, then this might be the book for you!
